Job description

A cycling instructor is a professional who specialises in teaching and supervising cycling activities. Their main mission is to pass on the techniques, practice and love of cycling to different audiences, whether beginners, amateurs or experienced athletes. Working in a range of settings (schools, sports clubs, leisure centres, associations or tourism businesses), the cycling instructor plays an essential role in promoting cycling and opening it up to everyone.

This job requires in-depth technical expertise and strong teaching skills. A cycling instructor must not only master cycling techniques perfectly but also know how to pass them on clearly, in a way that suits each type of audience. They give group or one-to-one lessons, run training courses and may also lead groups on rides or at competitions.

Required skills

A cycling instructor's skills are both technical and interpersonal. On the technical side, they need complete command of the bike in all its forms: road, mountain bike, cyclo-cross and urban cycling. In-depth knowledge of equipment, mechanics and bike maintenance is also essential. They must be able to analyse pedalling technique, correct riding posture and advise on choosing the right equipment.

On the interpersonal side, the cycling instructor must show teaching skills, patience and adaptability. They need to know how to motivate and reassure a wide range of people, from a child just starting out to an experienced cyclist. Communication, group management and activity leadership skills are essential. Since safety is at the heart of the job, a thorough command of safety rules and risk prevention is also crucial.

Training and qualifications

There are several training routes to becoming a cycling instructor in France. The most widely recognised qualification is the Brevet Professionnel de la Jeunesse, de l'Éducation Populaire et du Sport (BPJEPS, a French state vocational diploma for sports and youth leaders) with the "Activités du Cyclisme" (cycling activities) specialisation. This course, completed in one or two years depending on the route, provides the necessary technical and teaching skills.

Other certifications exist, such as the Diplôme d'État de Moniteur Cycliste (DEMC, state cycling instructor diploma), or specialised training in specific disciplines such as mountain biking or competitive cycling. Some professionals also choose to add further certifications in bike mechanics, physical conditioning or first aid.

Career development

A cycling instructor has many options for career progression. After a few years of experience, they can become head of a cycling school, set up their own teaching or consulting business, or specialise in a specific field such as cycle touring, sports coaching or high-performance training.

Some cycling instructors move into related roles such as route designer, equipment consultant or even business development manager at companies in the cycling industry. Others choose to switch to sports coaching or physical conditioning.

Salary and job prospects

A cycling instructor's salary varies with experience, qualifications and type of employer. At the start of their career, pay is around €1,500 to €2,000 gross per month. With experience and additional certifications, it can reach €2,500 to €3,000.

Job prospects are encouraging, driven by the growth of cycling in France. Interest in cycling is rising both for leisure and for getting around town, which creates more and more opportunities for cycling instructors. Local authorities, sports associations and tourism businesses are particularly active potential employers in this sector.
